This was the beginning of the digital era. I went to the Mentawais with a new digital camera, two memory cards, and this little mini hard drive. No backup drives, no laptop, and was carrying that hard drive on to the beach wading thru water and in the rain. I had to download after I shot because I only had two cards. That is unthinkable now days; I back everything up three and four times on trips now. Anyway, I got back to town, Transworld did an article, Billabong ran the “3-Time World Champ” ads and after that, within 2 to 3 months, film was practically dead and soon everyone was shooting digital cameras.
