Day 3: Yoga, Weighted Mountain Climbing, and Snorkeling
At Rawai, the southeastern coast of Phuket, you can begin early with a sunrise yoga session on palm-filled Friendship beach with Ocean Bloom, one of the island’s biggest fitness personalities. Then it’s time for a unique trek up Big Buddha mountain in Chalong, lead by Chris Allen. This uphill workout, held every Monday at 9:30 a.m., is a battle, completed by either wearing weighted vests, carrying sandbags, or, for the heavyweights, dragging tires. It is open for all to attend, but private bookings can be made with Atmanjai Detox and Wellness Center for any other day of the week.
The best compliment to the hill workout is a leisurely few hours of snorkeling. Ao Sane has three bays that offer some great underwater exploration. Amidst massive boulders dotting a 200-meter stretch of sand, you’ll find two distinct areas: a sharp drop into deeper waters as well as some coral accessible at high tide at the opposite side of the beach. Snorkel equipment can be rented at a small dive shop not too far from a few beachside restaurants, rudimentary bungalows, and some much needed shade.
