You don’t have to ditch civilization for a worthy adventure—especially given the current state of the world. Stay-in-place orders have most of us itching to get out, but that doesn’t have to mean hopping on a plane. There are plenty of urban adventures around the United States worthy of a road trip.

Go Whitewater Rafting in Richmond
Richmond has a penchant for ruminating on its Civil War past, but an increasing number of outdoor enthusiasts are flocking to the city not to tour its battlefields, but rather to run its river. The Virginia capital is the only place in the U.S. where you can tackle class IV rapids in the city limits. Head to River City Adventures in the historic Manchester District to launch a raft or inflatable kayak into the James River for a three-hour voyage down the arduous Lower Section (Reedy Creek to 14th Street).
Distance from the headwaters to Walkabout Outfitter: 4 miles.
Distance to the 7 Hills Brewing Company: 1 mile.
What you should order there: The flagship Belle Island Blonde Ale.
