Watch the Thrilling New Trailer for ‘Everest’ With Jake Gyllenhaal

In the past year, Everest has become a celebrity of monumental proportions. But director Baltasar Kormákur is taking the mountain's infamy from the news to the cinema in his new adventure film, Everest, which is based on a true story. The movie casts A-listers Josh Brolin, Robin Wright, Sam Worthington, Keira Knightley, and Jake Gyllenhaal as the members of the two climbing teams who faced an ill-fated summit attempt and struggle for survival in 1996.

Judging by the newly-released trailer, the film intensely documents the natural disasters climbers Beck Weathers, Rob Hall, and Scott Fischer encountered on that expedition, including one of the worst snowstorms in the history of the mountain. The movie's scary-real adaptations of the events are based on adventure author Jon Krakauer's coverage of the story for Outside magazine, which was later adapted into his bestselling book, Into Thin Air

Because the movie was shot in Nepal on the foothills of Everest and Italian Dolomites for IMAX 3D film, the footage gives you a harrowing and realistic experience — which is exactly what Kormákur wanted. "We set out to make a film as authentic as possible," he said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter

The trailer portrays that authenticity and serves up chill-inducing realities, from the opening sound bit of "You my friends, are following in the very footsteps of history — something beyond the power of words to describe" to its ending note reading: "Please join Universal Pictures and the filmmakers of Everest in supporting earthquake relief in Nepal. Visit oxfamamerica.org to donate."

Everest will debut in IMAX theaters nationwide September 18.
