In the 1920s, Laguna Beach lifeguards used to skim shallow waters on small pieces of wood. Some 90 years later, surfers in Spain have taken it to its next level — by adding a kite. In this video, surfer Mauricio Weppert coasts through the waters of Castelldefels, Spain, a long stretch of beach just south of Barcelona, twisting his untethered feet and jumping into a clean spin with his feet inches off the board.
It’s not likely this sport will catch on anytime soon. While skimboards are wide and flat enough to be used without foot straps, the kite works against gravity, making it nearly impossible to stay on the board. In other words, Weppert makes it look easy.
