Matsuo Basho, The Narrow Road to the Deep North and Other Travel Sketches
Some books are formative for those looking to write about the natural world around them. The Narrow Road to the Deep North is the account of a trip taken by the poet Matsuo Basho to northern Japan late in the 17th century. It’s a work that looms large in literature around the world — Robert MacFarlane cited it in his The Old Ways, for instance. A 1966 translation into English by Nobuyuki Yuasa makes Basho’s work immediately accessible, as well as showcasing how his observations set the template for numerous writers to come.
