Peter Matthiessen, The Snow Leopard
In 1973, Peter Matthiessen traveled to Nepal to accompany biologist George Schaller in his search for evidence of the elusive snow leopard in the Himalayas. The Snow Leopard, the book that resulted, would win the National Book Award. Throughout the book, Matthiessen movingly observes the landscape and wildlife around him. He also chronicles the process of grieving for his wife, who had died not long before he made the trip, adding a moving and meditative aspect to the work as a whole.
