World Professional Surfers (WPS) Is Looking For An Athlete Representative

WORLD PROFESSIONAL SURFERS (WPS) which comprises all current ASP World Championship Tour Surfers is seeking a Full-Time Athlete Representative

This is a new position created by the WPS to develop theassociation and enhance its profile, rights and interests.

Good Administrative and Communication Skills
Marketing and Media experience
Strong Negotiation and Communication Ability
An Understanding of the International Sports Marketplace
Passion for the Sport of Surfing and Empathy for Athletes’Rights

WPS offers flexibility in the geographic base for the position. The successful candidate will be offered a fixed term contract and a remuneration package which combines a basic salary with the opportunity to earn attractive incentiveson achieving agreed financial goals for the WPS

1.The World Professional Surfers (WPS) was formed at Jeffrey’s Bay in July 2001 and has become a ‘Union and Single Voice’ for theTop ASP 45 World Championship Tour (WCT) Surfers. The Membership is to be extended to invite World Qualifying Surfers (WQS).

2.The Surfers are aware of their responsibility, as Ambassadors of the Sport, the influence they have and the need for they, as athletes, to play an active role in the promotion and organisation of their sport through the media and international community.

3.Although surfing is an individual sport, the sense of community within the culture is strong. The WPS see it as their collective responsibility to help each other at all stages of their surfing life. Whether it be during the rigours of tour life or in future stages of life.

4.The WPS will seek to minimise the risks of life as a Professional Surfer and safeguard the welfare and interests of its Members through discussion, as a Group, and with the Companies and Organisations involved in pro-surfing.

5.The WPS intends to assist its Members in securing the appropriate legal and accountancy advice as and when required whilst Members are competing on the Tour.

6.The WPS intends to actively seek and promote vocational training and careers education courses for Members whilst on Tour to assist them in preparation for life after pro-surfing.

7.The WPS intends to provide a source of advice and career introductions together with support for Surfers seeking employment following retirement from the pro-tour.

8.The WPS proposes to create a Benevolent Fund to donate towards Members whose lives have been disrupted by injury or serious illness.
