You know binge drinking is bad for your health and drunk driving is illegal, but new research suggests driving while dehydrated can be just as dangerous. Yes, that’s driving without having enough to drink (water, that is.)
Researchers from Loughborough University in the UK carried out a range of tests on male drivers using a laboratory-based driving simulator over the span of two days. During the normal hydration test, there were 47 driving “incidents” (i.e. lane drifting, late braking, and touching or crossing the rumble strip or lane line), but when the men were dehydrated, the number of mistakes rose to 101, similar to what might be expected of a group of people driving under the influence of alcohol.
Driving while dehydrated may just be worse for your mind and body than that late-night bender. Remember that, and read this if you’re not sure how much water you should drink in a day.
