The competition for the Best Picture honor at this year’s Academy Awards might be the most contentious race in recent history. Whether the winner ends up being Tom McCarthy’s provocative drama Spotlight, or a repeat victory by Alejandro González Iñárritu with The Revenant, or perhaps one of the other six features, the picture will have earned its place in the history books. Some have even contested that there were blatant omissions this year amongst the nominees, including Todd Haynes’s Carol and Ryan Coogler’s Creed.
But while 2016 was an undeniably good year for cinephiles, it’s only honest to state that some years have produced a better field of works than others, and just because a movie has a gold statuette associated with its name, does not automatically warrant two hours of your day. Especially when you note that Cecille B. DeMille’s circus mess The Greatest Show On Earth won over Gene Kelly’s iconic Singin’ In The Rain, and Rob Marshall’s Chicago took the top prize over Roman Polanski’s poignant masterpiece The Pianist. Or perhaps you forgot that Shakespeare in Love took the top prize over Saving Private Ryan?
Now, here’s a list of Best Picture winners that are still just as golden today.
