‘The Hot Generation’ (Paul Witzig, 1968)
The shortboard revolution killed the longboard (for a few years, at least), and dropkicked surfing into the hazy far reaches of the counterculture. ‘Generation,’ along with Witzig’s follow-ups, ‘Evolution‘ and ‘Sea of Joy,’ track this crucial and slightly ridiculous four-year phase, from its 1967 beginnings to its early-seventies conclusion. All three were remixed and remastered in 2011, and while rough patches remain – the ‘Evolution’ soundtrack has a few freeform psychedelic jams that will make you wish drugs were never invented – the best parts remain as gorgeous as they are historic.
