Why, exactly, are those boys in that reform camp digging all those holes in the desert? If your kids have read Louis Sachar’s young adult novel, they’ll already know the answer — and they’ll still get a kick out of this semi-oddball, refreshingly smart take on adolescent adventure and tween-to-teenage spirit. The only disadvantage: You’ll have to explain to them who the Fonz is when Henry Winkler shows up, and that long before he staged performance-art stunts, Shia LeBeouf was a solid child actor.
