Sabbath’s Theatre, Philip Roth
There will always be debate as to which of Philip Roth’s books are his best. And for the sake of argument, Portnoy’s Complaint is his most popular, certain characters who Roth often gives multiple novels worth of attention to might be more interesting, and The Plot Against America might be more intriguing to people that aren’t that into his other work. But with this 1995 National Book Award winner, Roth gives us Mickey Sabbath, a man in his 60s who says “fuck it” to everything and gives us Roth most concise, cutting, and enjoyable novel overall.
