The Intuitionist, Colson Whitehead
This book shows why Whitehead is a genius (at least according to the MacArthur Foundation): he wrote a reworked history about race in America in which the main character is an elevator inspector. Lila Mae Watson is an inspector of the Intuitionist school, who uses a gestalt approach to determine if an elevator is functioning properly, sending her on the hunt for a mythical perfect elevator that will lift the people into the future.
