3. The David Fincher effect
As an executive producer of the series—along with actress Charlize Theron—and the director of four episodes, Fincher’s influence is everywhere on the show. Fincher’s films like Se7en and Zodiac have covered similar territory to Mindhunter, and the aesthetics of both—the muted color palette, gray skies, bureaucratic offices full of file cabinets—are present on the Netflix series. McCallany, who previously worked with Fincher on Fight Club and Alien 3, had high praise for the director and his work on the series.
“With David, I really feel like I’m working with one of the greatest filmmakers of his generation,” McCallany says. “He’s got great taste in material and he’s got great taste in actors. He demands excellence from everyone in every department on Mindhunter. He has a very clear vision of what he wants on the show, and can clearly articulate that vision. To be reunited with David was very exciting for me. I believe in David’s talent, he’s an extraordinarily gifted filmmaker. He’s meticulous and has an encyclopedic knowledge of every aspect of the filmmaking process. David always brings out the best in you as an actor. If you have a fascinating character to play, and you’re working with someone like David, that’s sort of an actor’s dream to me. I have that here.”
