2. The cast practiced firearms handling at the ‘John Wick’ range
Before starting production, MacPherson and the cast did a lot of firearms training to get comfortable with the weapons they would be using on the show. Once he was cast, MacPherson started to train with Marine veterans and recently retired Navy SEALs—but for him, the firearms training started “from scratch,” because gun laws in Australia are very strict.
“The first thing I did was buy a bunch of Airsoft weapons and have them all around my house to get comfortable,” MacPherson said. “My poor wife would be cooking dinner with a replica M4 just lying around [laughs]. Then when we started training, we did a lot of gun drills and movement drills, and all live-fire. We didn’t muck around. It was only when we got on set that we started shooting blanks. But we did a lot of moving in pairs, teamwork exercises, and a lot of times I was doing that with SEAL instructors as opposed to other actors. Then we went up and trained at Taran Tactical, the same place Keanu Reeves did his training for John Wick. We got to go out there a bunch of times on the same range. I was pinching myself being on the same range as Keanu.”Back to top
