Historically the summer season has been a time that the big studios unleash their most ostentatious tent-pole clutter. Because of this strategy the term “summer blockbuster” is typically code for a film that matches big draw actors with explosions and spandex, but lacks any true substance. Certainly, these big event films employ a lot of flash to pull big crowds away from their outdoor evening plans. But today’s audiences are demanding more from their cinema experience and flops resulting from what were considered surefire projects like Zoolander 2 and Alice Through The Looking Glass prove it.That being said there are always a few gems hidden in the drudgery, especially in the later months when the studios are beginning to transition into their award season material.
