Jim Thorpe – All American
This biopic of the Native American Olympian Jim Thorpe not only showcases the highs of the athlete’s victories in the pentathlon and decathlon but also his struggles adjusting to life after having his medals stripped when it was discovered he was paid to play. Starring Burt Lancaster in the title role, and utilizing archival footage of the 1912 and 1932 Summer Olympics, the picture is an impressive effort for its time (the movie came out in 1951). In the spirit of inclusivity, director Michael Curtiz hired a number of Native American actors, and Thorpe even makes a cameo appearance as a coaching assistant.
