Prefontaine & Without Limits
Steve Prefontaine’s story was so compelling it got made into a movie twice — in one year. Prefontaine stars a young Jared Leto in the title role and follows the record-holding long-distance runner, who tragically died at the young age of 24 in an automobile accident. Leto is impressive onscreen and looks the part, showcasing the runner’s famous long locks. The second movie, Without Limits, stars Billy Crudup, and was directed by Robert Towne, who also did Personal Best. Their version is benefited by the focus pointed at the bond between Prefontaine and his coach Bill Bowerman, who later became the founder of Nike.
