Jason Momoa and the team behind Aquaman are riding the wave of a historic year for movies. The film, which made its stateside debut over the weekend, raked in $64.7 million at the box office domestically, trumping other Christmas releases to become one of the top 10 December openings of all time, according to Box Office Mojo. Some of those other heavy-hitting flicks include Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Avatar.
Those figures are especially notable considering the timing of the opening. Movie theaters generally don’t sell many tickets through Christmas Eve, THR reports, but the period between Christmas and New Year’s Eve often sees a spike in sales. According to Box Office Mojo, Christmas Day is traditionally the busiest day of the year for cinemas.
Although the busy season is just beginning, 2018 has already set a new record for movie tickets sold in North America: Theaters sold $11.381 billion in tickets through Monday, besting the previous record of $11.378 billion set in 2016, the New York Post reports. A string of blockbuster superhero films—Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, and Incredibles 2—helped drive a big boost in ticket sales. All three films grossed over $600 million.
Box Office Mojo estimates Aquaman is on track to haul in over $100 million in its five-day debut through Christmas. Check back here for more updates as the numbers are released, and get the scoop on everything you need to know about the film right here.
