The new Predator sequel from director Shane Black could have had a lot more muscle. Specifically, it almost had original Predator star Arnold Schwarzenegger’s muscles. The superstar actor was offered a chance to appear in the new film, but opted to turn it down, according to an interview with Black with Yahoo Movies UK.

Black and the filmmakers had hoped to have Schwarzenegger appear in the movie, meeting with the actor and proposing some ideas to have a cameo for his character, Major Alan “Dutch” Schaefer.

“There were a couple of ideas to include [Arnie in The Predator], mostly in the third act,” Black said. “The studio…they were open to the idea to the notion of having him in, in a smaller role. I was fine with that, but it did present a problem, because when you call Mr. Schwarzenegger you don’t want to say: ‘Hey, we got this smaller role for you if you want it?’. I felt embarrassed to ask him, right?”

It turned out that Black’s initial thoughts were correct: “[Arnold] said: ‘Well, if I was featured more, yeah, but what you’re suggesting is that you’re creating this new thing and just using me to bless it.’ And so [I said], ahem… yes. And so I was not surprised when he said: ‘Look, I wish you luck, but that’s too small a role for me’.”

In 2017, while Predator was gearing up for production, Schwarzenegger hinted in an interview that he wasn’t too excited about what was initially offered to him, but left the door open to appearing.

“They asked me, and I read it, and I didn’t like it—whatever they offered,” Schwarzenegger said to Yahoo Movies. “So I’m not going to do that, no. Except if there’s a chance that they rewrite it, or make it a more significant role. But the way it is now, no, I won’t do that.”

Even though Schwarzenegger isn’t appearing in The Predator, he’s been keeping plenty busy. Schwarzenegger is starring in a new Terminator film alongside Linda Hamilton that’s being directed by Tim Miller (Deadpool), and he’s also set to star in the Western TV series Outrider for Amazon, while a Twins sequel Triplets is rumored to be happening as well.

The Predator will be released on September 14.
