Bradley Cooper did a little bit of everything for his new film A Star Is Born. Cooper is making his directorial debut on the movie, which he also stars in, co-wrote, produced, and wrote songs for. But that’s not all he did. Cooper also found time to do some casting for the film, specifically for the dog that Cooper’s character Jackson Maine and Ally (Lady Gaga) get together.

Cooper didn’t have to look far to find a dog that fit the role: Cooper cast his own dog Charlie for the part, according to People. The dog is named after Cooper’s father, who passed away in 2011.

“There was no nepotism, I wanted this relationship with the dog,” Cooper said in an interview at the Los Angeles premiere of the movie. “[Jackson and Ally] don’t have a child together but they have a dog together, and I wanted it to be part of their story. I love dogs.”

The decision to cast his own dog in the film earned Cooper some high praise from the animal rights group PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). The organization announced that it will honor Cooper with their “inaugural compassion in film award” for the decision, according to Variety.

“Bradley Cooper’s happy, adorable, and much-loved dog steals the spotlight — and viewers’ hearts — in this film because it’s clear that he loved being with his real-life ‘dad,’” said PETA senior vice president Lisa Lange said. “PETA has witnessed so much abuse and neglect of dogs, both on and off set, that we’re hoping Cooper’s kind decision sets a precedent for all of Hollywood to follow.”
