How Pot Works, According to the ‘Scratch & Sniff Book of Weed’

It turns out the Scratch & Sniff Book of Weed is one fact-filled book. Covering 4,000 years of weed’s cultural, sexual, psychoactive, and medical impactsSeth Matlins and Eve Epstein offer up one seriously informative tour — with ample scratch-and-sniff detours. Here, in an excerpt from the book, the authors break down the many ways marijuana can get you high. –Muri Assunção

When humans love a thing, they create as many varieties of it as possible —
hence the proliferation of potato chip flavors, dog breeds, and Star Wars
movies. Likewise, in our search for the labradoodle of cannabis, we’ve
come up with seemingly infinite strains and modes of delivery, each of
which uniquely impacts the effects. Amongst these are:

1. The subspecies — sativa, indica, or a hybrid of the two — which generally determines . . .

2. The proportions of terpenes and cannabinoids, which give rise to different psychoactive,
medicinal, and physiological effects, as well as specific scents and tastes; and

3. The mode of delivery, which can affect onset, duration, strength, and quality of the
high produced.

At the broadest level, there are two basic types of cannabis: sativa and indica. Sativas
are known for their high THC:CBD ratio and tend to produce a more energetic, cerebral,
creative high. Indicas are ideal for a Netflix-and-chill night, thanks to their “couch lock”
and sedative effects. Hybrids produce a combination of effects, depending on the mix.

Bottom line? As with beauty, preference is in the eye of the be-toker and variety
remains the spice of life.

There are all kinds of ways to get weed into your body, each its own
experience. Along with oils, tinctures, topicals, and, of course,
smoking out of a Coke can, there’s:

VAPING: By high-heating weed or its extracts, you boil the
cannabinoids and terpenes, then inhale the vapor.

DABBING: Typically refers to a dose of high-THC wax
placed on a hot surface, and inhaled through a dab rig,
producing a powerful,
immediate high.
Dabbing can be dangerous,
so please,
dear reader, be

EATING: This includes
anything from chocolates,
and the famed pot
brownie to serious
gastronomy. Eating
produces a slower
onset, but it also forms
a different
in your body,
causing a potent,
longer lasting high
