Preikestolen Rock Climb
Filmed In: Norway
Ethan Hunt will go to any length to get the mission done—that includes some high-altitude climbs. This final sequence was shot on the iconic Norwegian mountain plateau Preikestolen in the dead of winter. In order to prepare for the climb, Eastwood built an exact rockface replica.
“Whenever Tom had a break from shooting a scene or producing, he’d run over to the rock to climb,” Eastwood says.
Cruise worked on building up his finger and grip strength, as well as ramping up his bodyweight training so he could hang off the side of a cliff with confidence.
“It was a pretty hairy situation with the snow everywhere,” Eastwood admits. “It didn’t help that Cruise was climbing with frozen fingers. The conditions were shit.”
Cruise got the job done, though, and just in time. Just hours after McQuarrie and company wrapped shooting, a massive snowstorm swept through.
“Our aircraft was getting completely battered on the way out and we heard it was a whiteout,” says Eastwood. “We dodged a bullet.”
