The movie is a standalone in the DC Movie Universe, giving Phoenix and Phillips some freedom to explore the character. Major plot details have been kept under wraps, but Joker will follow a man named Arthur Fleck, who works as a comedian and clown and is struggling to find success. After a series of rough events, he turns into the Joker. The film is set a gritty Gotham City and will have a much more realistic look than the depiction of Joker in Suicide Squad.
