Joaquin Phoenix Is Starring in His First Comic Book Film
Over his more-than-three-decade acting career, Joaquin Phoenix has played nearly every kind of role Hollywood has to offer. He’s starred in historical epics (Gladiator), award-winning biopics (Walk the Line), romantic films (Two Lovers), sci-fi thrillers (Signs), indie dramas (Clay Pigeons, The Yards), period dramas (The Master, The Immigrant), and even a family comedy (Parenthood). The one thing he hasn’t done? Star in a comic book movie. Now, the three-time Academy Award nominee will get get the chance to show his range by playing one of the most iconic characters of all time.
Phoenix is an actor who usually zigs when everyone else zags. And while starring in a comic book movie might seem like Phoenix is finally doing the popular thing most big-name actors are doing these days, he’s naturally doing it in his own way. Instead of signing up for a 10-picture deal with contracts for sequels and spinoffs, Phoenix is doing a standalone film with an interesting director who hasn’t done a comic book film either. The freedom of doing a standalone film will allow Phoenix to do something new and unique with the character, and it should prove once again why he’s one of America’s best actors.
