Martin Scorsese Is (Kind Of) Involved
When news first broke about Phillips developing a standalone Joker film, one of the most exciting parts of the project was that legendary director Martin Scorsese would be involved as a producer. Deadline reported that the movie would “be a gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film set in early-’80s Gotham City that isn’t meant to feel like a DC movie as much as one of Scorsese’s films from that era, like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull or The King Of Comedy.”
While Scorsese is no longer involved in the film in an official capacity due to his hectic schedule (per THR), he still will be connected to the project through producer Emma Tillinger Koskoff, who worked on Scorsese’s film The Wolf of Wall Street. Having someone on the production team still connected to and trusted by Scorsese is a big plus, and likely means that the film still will have a vibe akin to Scorsese’s films like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and The King Of Comedy. Another reason why that’s likely? All of those films were shot and set in New York City, which is where the Joker film will start production in September.
