The Budget Is $55 Million
The Joker standalone will have a lower-than-usual budget for a comic book film at $55 million. For comparison, Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man and The Wasp cost over $160 million to make. The smaller budget is key because it will allow for some lower expectations for the project. For example, Solo: A Star Wars Story was saddled with extremely high expectations because it had a $275 million-plus budget (and an iconic character), meaning it had to make at least $500 million for it to be a semi-success. Instead, the huge budget and too high expectations led to less than $400 million in worldwide grosses. The lower budget on the Joker film means that Phillips (pictured) and Phoenix could take some more risks and not completely sink DC’s new movie banner for standalone films before it ever gets started.
