Justin Theroux Is the ‘Emotional Support Human’ for His Dog, Kuma

Everybody thinks that their dog is the smartest dog, the most handsome dog, the overall best dog of them all. Justin Theroux is no different. The January Men’s Journal cover star is definitely a dog lover, and he has a real soft spot for his dog, Kuma. We caught up with Theroux behind the scenes at our cover shoot, and he made it clear that he has lots of love for his canine companion.

“She is the best thing that ever happened to me,” he told Men’s Journal.

Kuma is a gray-brown pit bull, a breed that Theroux is especially fond of: He’s had three others in the past (including one that had a talent for catching rats scurrying around New York’s Washington Square Park, which inspired a tattoo on Theroux’s back). Kuma was rescued from the devastation following Hurricane Harvey, but Theroux considers himself the lucky one.

“I don’t know who’s helping who more,” he said. “She helps my life more than I help hers.”

An athletic dog like Kuma seems like the perfect match for a guy who runs errands by bombing around New York on a bike. Of course, like any pooch, she still demands plenty of attention, and Theroux treats her like a princess.

“She’s so needy,” he said. “I feel like I’m her service human.”
