The Beastie Boys have been inactive since the passing of Adam “MCA” Yauch in 2012, but that hasn't kept fellow MC Mike “Mike D” Diamond out of the public eye. He’s still rocking the mic, now with his own Apple Music Beats 1 Radio show called “The Echo Chamber,” broadcast biweekly on Fridays, direct from his pool house in Malibu.
In a recent Rolling Stone interview, The MC described the show as a freeform program that gives him and his guests a chance to talk about the music and records they love. Today, he sits down with six-time surfing world champion Stephanie Gilmore.
When it drops at 3 p.m. on Apple Music at (12 p.m. PDT), Mike D and Gilmore cover plenty of ground ranging from musical tastes to a rousing ping pong game (see below). Expect to hear plenty of songs, including at least one from Madonna, who the Beastie Boys toured with in the '80s. And Mike D's got quite the Madge story to share from being on her 'Like A Virgin' tour. "We were almost gonna get thrown off that tour because the audience disliked us so immensely…. For 20 minutes we were exactly what they didn’t want to hear, and then Madonna would come in, and it made it even better. ‘You’ve saved us again Madonna. Thank you,' " says Mike D.
Thankfully, there's no nails-on-a-chalkboard excruciating sounds to be found on this ep. And between Gilmore being a huge music fan, and Mike D. a massive surfing enthusiast, it made for quite the conversation.
The Echo Chamber is broadcast Fridays biweekly on Beats 1 Radio on Apple Music.
