‘30 Rock‘ star Alec Baldwin is on the cover of ‘Men’s Journal’s’ July 2012 issue, on newsstands now. The comic legend – he’s a three-time Golden Globe winner and has hosted ‘SNL‘ a record 16 times – and occasional paparazzi foe talks about his unlikely evolution from leading man to comedy MVP, his new marriage, and his wide range of interests and influences. At 53, Baldwin has never been busier or more engaged: In addition to his films (he stars in Woody Allen’s ‘To Rome with Love‘ next month) and television roles, he’s making a documentary, does a regular podcast for public radio, and is often spoken of as a promising candidate for Mayor of New York. And as he explains to Mark Binelli, he wouldn’t change a thing. Some highlights from the magazine story:
• In the aftermath of ‘Working Girl‘ and ‘The Hunt for Red October,’ people around Baldwin began saying, “you do exactly what we tell you to do and you’re going to be the next Kevin Costner.” But, as Baldwin describes it, he began to get nervous. “It happened almost all unconsciously,” he says. “Beat by beat, day by day, month by month, project by project, offer by offer: I’d be sitting there going ‘I don’t want to do that.'”
• Baldwin currently stars alongside British funnyman Russell Brand in ‘Rock of Ages.’ When they’re together, “women…walk by, and you literally see them buckle,” Baldwin says about his co-star. “He has an energy to him – I’ve never seen anything like it in my life. He probably could have had sex with 150 different women a day.”
• Baldwin offers an intimate look inside his relationship with fiancée Hilaria Thomas, who he met in early 2011 at an upscale raw-food restaurant in Manhattan. When he and Thomas moved in together, it was the first time he’d lived with anyone in more than 10 years. “I just realized I was happy when she was around,” he says of Thomas, 28, “and less happy when she wasn’t.”
• Once ’30 Rock’ wraps, Baldwin plans to take six months off to plan his future, which may not involve making another film if that means too much time away from his fiancée. “I like the challenge of a difficult role, and the recognition that comes with it. But the most critical thing I can say to you is that my ambition is still real, but now it’s competing with another ambition. Making this relationship work is such a goal of mine.”
