For my money, the most important part of last night’s vice-presidential debate between lovable Replacements fan Tim Kaine and creepy evolution-denier Mike Pence was when Kaine said to the room, “Six times tonight, I have said to Governor Pence, ‘I can’t imagine how you can defend your running mate’s position on one issue after the next.’ And in all six cases, he’s refused to defend his running mate. And yet he is asking everybody to vote for somebody that he cannot defend."
It was a mic-drop moment, and one that seemed to clinch a victory for Kaine. But not according to the RNC website, which, surprise surprise, had declared Pence the winner. Only… wait a minute, they actually declared him the winner before the debate even started.
A post on the RNC website, published at around 7 p.m., two hours before the debate began, read:
Americans from all across the country tuned in to watch the one and only Vice Presidential debate. During the debate we helped fact check and monitor the conversation in real time @GOP. The consensus was clear after the dust settled, Mike Pence was the clear winner of the debate.
I am well aware that Trump/Pence supporters everywhere — and by everywhere I mean in the Facebook comments on this post — will point out that this is a non-story, and really just business as usual. Which, sure, it's not like they were ever going to be like, "Shit, we kinda lost that one, didn't we?" But still, it is sad and funny, just like everything else about this nightmare of an election. So there you go.
