Ryan Gosling is ready for liftoff. The actor has re-teamed with his La La Land director Damien Chazelle for First Man, a dramatic look at the life of Neil Armstrong as he trained and prepared for the Apollo 11 mission in 1969.
The film is based on the book First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong, and Chazelle’s direction gives the movie an epic scale, while also focusing on small character moments between Gosling’s Armstrong and his family, including his wife, played by The Crown’s Claire Foy. Even though we all know how this story ends, Armstrong’s family has no idea if he’ll even make it through this mission alive.
In First Man, going to space isn’t some easy feat—there’s danger lurking around every corner. From test flight crashes to the jittery, mechanical nature of what it takes to blast human beings thousands of miles from Earth, Chazelle is playing up the realism of space flight, giving the movie a pulse-pounding, intense feel that should put the project firmly in the awards race for 2018.
The film has an all-star supporting cast, including Foy, Kyle Chandler, Jason Clarke, Corey Stoll, Ciaran Hinds, Christopher Abbott, Patrick Fugit, and Lukas Haas. It also has a big name on the production side: Steven Spielberg is an executive producer on the film.
