7. The Intern (2015)
To be clear, I do not particularly recommend the Nancy Meyers film The Intern, though it is somewhat less toxically self-regarding than her worst (which is to say, The Holiday). It's overlong and overwritten and has way too many throw pillows, but Meyers does create two immensely likable characters for Anne Hathaway and De Niro to play. As a widowed businessman who takes an unpaid internship with Hathaway's company just to get out of the house, De Niro exudes a lovely, grandfatherly warmth not often associated with his grimacing persona. See also Everybody's Fine, another movie that isn't very good but gets a lot of mileage out of De Niro as a mild-mannered dad type, and a nice counterpoint to his intimidation tactics in the Fockers movies.
