If you were righteously indignant after binge-watching Making a Murderer then I promise you that after reading through Barthel’s book – first published in 1977, reissued in digital format last month – on the 1973 murder of Barbara Gibbons in Connecticut, and the wrongful conviction of her 18-year-old son Peter Reilly, that sense of outrage will return several times amplified. Back then the likes of William Styron, Renata Adler, Philip Roth, and Arthur Miller wrote letters in support of Reilly. Now? We still don’t know who killed Gibbons.
