Popular Crime, by Bill James
Whether this is truly a favorite of mine remains in question because, weeks after I finally finished the book, after years of trepidation about reading it, I’m still holding arguments with James in my brain about some of his ideas and applauding him for others. James, best known for his Baseball Abstracts and other sportswriting and statistics, is the best reader true crime could have, and is not shy about his opinions on the more than 1,000 genre books he’s read. Some of his theories are crackpot, some are genius, and that’s why this book is a must-read.
