Super Mario Odyssey
There are two reasons to track down a Switch this year, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Super Mario Odyssey. This is—without a doubt—the best Mario game ever made. It’s also the perfect showcase for Nintendo’s new console, which has been in short supply, in part, because of this game. The game’s visuals are unlike any previous Mario game, and the colors really pop through the wacky levels that range from New Donk City (a New York City clone complete with life-sized citizens who tower over Mario) to the prehistoric jungles of Forgotten Isle to the snow-capped mountains of Shiveria. The constantly changing gameplay keeps you on your toes as you explore the 17 open world kingdoms. The action remains surprising and fun as it switches from driving a tank down the middle of a crowded city to shepherding a sheep through the desert (dressed as a clown). New to the gameplay experience is Mario’s ability to possess characters and objects (taking control of a frog to leap higher) through the sentient hat, Cappy. The game’s puzzles have been designed around this concept, allowing a lot of creative freedom in how you solve things. The ability to take Mario on the go is also a huge bonus for this game.
