Christian Bale might be the most experienced actor in Hollywood when it comes to manipulating his physique. From playing Batman in The Dark Knight trilogy to losing 60 pounds for The Machinist, Bale commits to his roles like no other. For Vice, the biopic of Dick Cheney, Bale did the opposite of his Machinist prep: He gained weight and became nearly unrecognizeable, looking almost idenitcal to Cheney. To do it, he ramped up his calorie consumption and worked with celebrity trainer Steve Zim to add muscle in the right places.
“I had never before gone to a doctor or a nutritionist about gaining or losing weight for my roles,” Bale told Star2.com. “But eventually that caught up with me. So, finally for [Vice], I decided that maybe somebody knows better than I do; so I went to somebody and they managed to get me up a good 40lbs. It’s never healthy to put on that amount of weight in a short amount of time, but I did it in the healthiest manner.”
