13. Snowpiercer (2013)
A highly entertaining tour de force in which a train travels nonstop around an Earth in the middle of a new ice age, brought about by scientists trying to reverse the greenhouse effect (they overshot a little). Chris Evans leads a revolt from the back of the train, where the lower classes are kept in squalor, to the front cars, where upper classes are living high on the hog. According to Martin, while it makes for a cool flick, the story doesn’t really add up in terms of realism. “You can’t have a train go around the Earth during an ice age. Maybe during a virus or after an earthquake, or a nuclear event — those would have been a more realistic element of storyline. A train barely stays on tracks during normal conditions. It’s not the best of terrain vehicles. You’ve got ice on the tracks, avalanches, and winds to deal with.”
