The ‘Master of None’ Season 2 Food Guide to Italy

Master of None co-creators Aziz Ansari and Alan Yang knew exactly where they wanted to go if their Netflix series got picked up for a second season: Italy.

“Italy had been on our minds for a long time,” says Yang. “Aziz and I had gone on a few trips for fun, so we knew that it would be an incredible place to set a show.” Those are the wishful ideas that you are able to make into realities once you get nominated for four Emmys and even take one home. For weeks the cast and crew lived on location in Modena, a.k.a. the birthplace of Ferrari, where Ansari’s character Dev enrolls in a pasta-making course, after giving up on his showbiz career.

Modena is beautiful and also I was almost fed to death here.

During filming the pair allowed themselves to enjoy the experience, squeezing a few epic dinners and late-night cocktails into their busy production schedule. “It is safe to say that if you see it on the show, we indulged a little there ourselves,” admits Yang, laughing. “Listen, we didn’t want to endorse places that we haven’t tried out personally.” Luckily for us, Yang kept diligent notes about their favorite spots, and he was willing to share his idea of a perfect day in Modena.

First Stop: Salumeria Giusti
“I think you try to keep breakfast light, so you can really save room for later that evening. This is a charming delicatessen shop where they have a huge spread of meats, cheese, and preserved goods. Snacking here is a blast.”

Second Stop: MENOMOKA
“This is a fantastic place to chill out for a little bit and grab an amazing coffee. It is a cozy little spot and there is an awesome little outdoor area that you can occupy when the weather is nice. I had my birthday while we were filming, and this is actually where we celebrated.”

Third Stop: Hosteria Giusti
“Return back to where you were warming up with the snacks, walk through the kitchen and behind there is an amazing restaurant. The whole experience feels very old school. There is a ‘Pasta of the Day’ special that you really can’t go wrong with, because they make it there fresh.”

Ottimo gnocco fritto. (Really good fried dough thing with salumi on top).

Fourth Stop: Archer
“Sit outside at this wine bar to relax a little bit between meals. The atmosphere is really great. There is nothing like relaxing between a few great meals.”

Fifth Stop: Osteria Francescana (or Franceschetta58)
“If you can score a seat here, it is the must-stop place in Modena. It has made the Best Restaurant lists, and chef Massimo Bottura is a master. I was able to try it out, and had the tortellini with cream sauce, which is one of his top-ranked dishes. There is a sister restaurant called Franceschetta58 that is just as fantastic if you can’t get in.”

Sixth Stop: Sleep
The Master of None gang stayed at Best Western Premier Milano Palace, which boasts plenty of modern amenities and a spa complete with a whirlpool. But if you are looking for a slightly more authentic experience, there are plenty of rustic options available on AirBnB.
