There’s a new pilot in town for the Top Gun sequel.
Actor Miles Teller has joined the cast of Top Gun: Maverick alongside stars Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer in the role of Goose’s son, according to Variety. In the original film, Goose was the co-pilot of Maverick (Cruise) and was played by actor Anthony Edwards.
Teller won the role after duking it out with other finalists Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: Apocalypse) and Glen Powell (The Expendables 3), all of whom tested with Cruise. Kilmer previously was cast to reprise his role of Iceman, Maverick’s rival pilot from the original Top Gun.
The Top Gun sequel will follow Maverick as he navigates a new world that includes drone technology, a new generation of pilots, and less of a need for hotshot fighter pilots from Iceman and Maverick’s era.
Teller, who broke out with his role in Whiplash and recently starred in Thank You For Your Service, War Dogs, and Bleed For This, has a connection with Top Gun 2 director Joseph Kosinski—Teller starred alongside Josh Brolin in the firefighting drama Only the Brave, which Kosinski also directed.
Top Gun: Maverick, directed by Joseph Kosinski, will be released on July 12, 2019.
Get pumped for the new Top Gun with some “Danger Zone” from Kenny Loggins—who will also be back for the sequel with a new version of the song:
