“Good evening ladies and remaining gentlemen,” Seth Meyers said when he opened the 2018 Golden Globe awards on Sunday night. “Happy New Year, Hollywood. It’s 2018: Marijuana is finally allowed and sexual harassment finally isn’t. It’s gonna be a good year.”
A man may have hosted the 75th annual edition of the awards show, but the focus was on women, in part because so many in Hollywood used the event to respond to unify against the culture of harassment and abuse in that industry. They did so in symbolic ways—most of the stars wore black to show their allegiance to Time’s Up, a movement dedicated to stopping these abuses in workplaces across industries—and in functional ways, like voting for and promoting stories told by women and for women.
For his part, our January cover guy made a really tough job (making talking about highly serious subject funny and entertaining) look almost easy.
“There’s a new era underway, and I can tell because it’s been years since a white man was this nervous in Hollywood,” Meyers said to uproarious laughter. “By the way, a special hello to hosts of other upcoming awards shows who are watching me tonight like the first dog they shot into outer space.”
