Who Is Human, and Who Is a Robot Host?
With a lengthy cast list and lots of characters to keep track of, you may have forgotten who the actual humans are on the show, and who are robot hosts that inhabit the park. Here’s a breakdown of some of the main characters, plus where they might be heading in Season 2.
Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) – HOST: She’s the oldest android in the park, and when Season 2 picks up, she’s basically become the leader of the robot uprising against the humans. Dolores spent the first season slowly becoming more self-aware, and in the finale, she reaches the point where she’s basically a fully conscious robot with a few grudges against her creators.
Robert Ford (Anthony Hopkins) – HUMAN: As the co-founder and creative director of Westworld, Ford had a prominent role in directing the storylines for the hosts in the park, and he often argued with the Delos board (the company that owns the park) about where to take them next. By the end of the season, Ford reveals that one of his goals all along was for the robots to become self-aware. Although Dolores seemingly killed Ford in the finale (more on that in a minute), it’s possible he could return in Season 2 as a host—or something else.
Maeve (Thandie Newton) – HOST: The former headmistress of the Sweetwater brothel has become more self-aware—and upgraded—and now she’s on the hunt for her long-lost daughter. While it’s still not clear if Maeve has an actual daughter, she remembers her, and turned down a chance to leave Westworld in the Season 1 finale to try and find her.
Man in Black (Ed Harris) – HUMAN: Throughout most of the first season, the MIB is portrayed as a veteran guest of the park who is trying to find the “deeper game” of Westworld. It’s later revealed that the Man in Black and William (Jimmi Simpson), who the audience has watched go through the park on his own story track, are the same person 30 years apart. It turns out, William has a bigger connection to Delos than anyone realized: He’s not only the majority shareholder of Westworld; he’s also a member of the board of Delos.
Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) – HOST: After spending most of Season 1 with the audience thinking he’s human, it’s later revealed that Bernard is, in fact, an android as well. Bernard was created by Ford in the image of his partner, Arnold, who died around the time the park opened in a mysterious “accident.” The original Arnold knew that the hosts had the ability to become self-aware, and tried to stop the park from opening. It’s later revealed that Arnold got Dolores to kill him as a form of suicide, and to help propel her to eventually reach self-consciousness. Bernard enters Season 2 trying to put the pieces of his past together.
Tessa Thompson (Charlotte Hale) – HUMAN: As executive director of the board for Delos, it was up to Thompson to try and get Ford under control to help maximize the revenue of Westworld. During Season 1, it’s revealed that Delos is trying to sneak data out of the park behind the back of Ford—will that data resurface as a sort of “Chekhov’s gun” for Season 2?
