From Hollywood underdog to big-screen superhero in Shazam!, Men’s Journal April cover star Zachary Levi has certainly been through a lot. And that’s required no small amount of reinvention—including a serious bulk-up to play the title role in DC’s latest superhero flick. Behind the scenes at our cover shoot, we sat down with Levi to learn more about what makes him tick, and he shared that one guiding principle has helped him through it all: learning to love yourself.
“I think that’s the most important thing I’ve maybe ever heard in my life,” he said.
It’s a deceptively simple concept, and an easy one to confuse with run-of-the-mill greeting card mush. For Levi, however, really understanding what loving yourself means has been a powerful factor in his success. He pointed out that accepting yourself and realizing your self worth can be highly therapeutic.
Understanding what it means to love yourself is key to dealing with adversity, and Levi has certainly seen his fair share. As he told us in our cover story, he’s wrestled with everything from Hollywood rejection to depression. But he powered through it by accepting himself—and pushing himself for more. Self-acceptance is now his credo.
“That’s all I want to help people to be able to do,” he said.
