Sierra Mar in Big Sur, California
Perched atop a cliff, this northern California restaurant spoils diners with close-ups of the Santa Lucia Mountain Range and views of the Pacific Ocean from 1,200 feet above it. Equally impressive? Sierra Mar has a hyper-local focus. We’re aware: That’s become a trite culinary catchphrase. But, at this restaurant, a part of the Post Ranch Inn, they really mean it. Yellow oxalis flowers, or “sour grass,” just might be plucked from the coast, put through a wheat-grass juicer, and served atop scallops.
Menu standout: The seasonal menus are ever-changing. You can choose between four-course and nine-course menus. Go ahead, you know what to do. The nine-course “Taste of Big Sur” is comprised of the chef’s picks, but on any given night could feature something like venison tenderloin with berries and buckwheat.
