To celebrate the final stretch of summer before your days are filled with fantasy football and fall boots, a Labor Day backyard barbecue is in order. Prepare your protein-packed lineup of (somewhat) healthy BBQ fare, then hit the liquor store, because nothing heightens a cookout like some irresistible cocktails.
There’s something for everyone in this roundup of delightfully boozy beverages. Some are sweet, like the Red Raspberry Lemonade made with New Amsterdam vodka. Others are savory, such as the Hair of the Dog Bloody Mary that uses a pickle-infused Tito’s. And others are a simple as mixing some rooibos tea bags and Hennessy X.O. with some ice. Whatever recipe you choose, you’ll be adding something more to the party than the typical beer and hard seltzers.
The reason for the holiday
If you’re looking for someone to toast this weekend, you may want to raise your glass to the founder of Labor Day. We know President Grover Cleveland signed the holiday into law in 1894. However, history is a little hazy on the exact identity of the founding father. Two men involved in the U.S. labor movement in the late 19th century with similar last names have both been hailed as the driving force behind the holiday. Both Peter McGuire, founder the United Brotherhood of Carpenters in 1881, and Matthew Maguire, a machinist who was secretary of the Central Labor Union of New York, have their supporters for the title of ‘Father of Labor Day.’ In any case, both men were strong advocates for the labor movement that is being celebrated every first Monday of September. So cheers to Mr. McGuire and Mr. Maguire.
Whoever you toast to, all 15 of these recipes will liven up your Labor Day festivities. Try one or all—just not in one day. Moderation is key, and we promote responsible drinking.
