Thief Bar, Oslo
Why It’s a Standout: This bar on the mezzanine of the Thief Hotel has become a popular hangout for Oslo’s creative types plus the jetsetters who stay in the city’s hotel du jour since its unveiling in December 2012. The menu (managed by Kenneth James Charles) is split between classic cocktails and the bar’s signature concoctions which use fresh juices, authentic Norwegian herbs, and unexpected ingredients sourced from the kitchen, like brown cheese and smoked salmon. When served, they’re the quirkiest artisan creations you’re likely to find anywhere, each trying to replicate real art, from a bacon-topped drink served in a glass pipe to a hollowed-out wooden monkey head.
The Drink to Order: The new artisinal cocktail menu goes live in the spring, when you can get the star beverage, Beautiful, Amore, Gasp. The drink, based on a Damien Hirst painting, combines Absolut Elyx vodka with Cocchi Americano and semisweet vermouth with hints of Maraschino, white chocolate, and lime. It’s served in a copper glass. On the side, a small chocolate replica of Hirst’s painting.
