Half-Smoke (Washington, D.C.)
More a sausage than a hot dog, the half-smoke is a Washington, D.C. thing: half pork, half beef, all smoked. The meat is coarsely ground and a little spicy; common toppings are diced onion, mustard, and chili.
Where to Get It: A D.C. institution since 1958, Ben’s Chili Bowl is beloved for its half-smokes (from Maryland’s Manger Packing Corp.), celebrity fan club, and late-night cast of characters. Thankfully, the spicy chili half-smoke – thick and meaty, skin nicely charred – more than hits the spot. 213 U St. NW Washington, D.C.Back to top
