5 Mouthwatering Campfire Desserts (That Aren’t S’Mores)

Summer may be officially over but bonfire season is just getting started. S’mores have been a camping staple for years but there are a number of equally delicious treats that can be made over an open fire. We’ve rounded up five creative, tried-and-true spins on dessert recipes for your next camping trip.

Orange Cakes

-Cake mix (chocolate or yellow)

-Water, 1 cup

-Chocolate chips (optional)


-Slice the top off an orange and save for later. Scoop out and eat the inside of the orange with a spoon, being sure to keep the peel intact.

-Add water to cake mix and pour into the hollow orange, about 3/4 full.

-Sprinkle in a handful of chocolate chips if desired.

-Replace the top of the orange as a lid and wrap in tinfoil.

-Place in the embers and let cook for 10-15 minutes.

Sweet Stick Bread

-Self-rising flour, 1 cup

-Sugar, 1 tsp

-Butter, 1 tbsp

-Milk, 1/4 cup

-Salt, 1 pinch

-Chocolate chips (optional)


-Mix butter into the flour until you reach a crumbly consistency.

-Add salt, sugar and slowly mix in milk until the mixture forms dough.

-Add chocolate chips to taste.

-Evenly divide dough in half and roll out into long strands.

-Wrap the dough around sticks and cook over the fire.

Non-Fancy Fondue

Forget upscale restaurants – this luxuriously simple dessert dip is perfect for a night under the stars.


-Chocolate chips, 1 cup

-Snacks to dip:





-Add chocolate to a fire safe pot and place on a metal grate or in the embers.

-Stir occasionally to ensure the chocolate doesn’t burn.

-Once melted, carefully remove the pot from the fire.

-Add your favorite treats to skewers or sticks, dunk in chocolate and enjoy.

Cinnamon Dessert Tortillas

Simple yet delicious, Cinnamon Tortillas are a perfect quick-prep dessert option.




-Cinnamon, 1 tbsp

-Sugar, ¾ cup


-Place a frying pan on a metal grate or in the embers and heat both sides of a tortilla.

-Combine cinnamon and sugar in a bowl.

-Spread on a cube of butter and sprinkle cinnamon sugar to taste.

-Fold in half to make a dessert quesadilla, or eat open-faced like toast.

Chocolate, PB & Chex “Puppy Chow”

A party favorite and seamless camp fire treat.


-Chex cereal, 1 cup

-Chocolate chips, 1/2 cup

-Peanut butter, 1/4 cup


-Fill an empty aluminum can or pot with peanut butter and chocolate chips and place on a grate or in the coals.

-Once the ingredients have melted, remove from the fire and stir in Chex cereal.

-Use the mix as a dip for graham crackers or eat it as is.
