Located in Portland, Oregon, The Original Dinerant is a contemporary version of the supper clubs that sprouted up around the U.S. in the 1950s and 60s. The restaurant takes comfort food staples like burgers, fries, and chicken wings and adds its own unique style. Variations on classics include donuts as burger rolls, smoked wings, and adding cheese curds and gravy to complement the fried potato goodness. Entrees include meatloaf, bacon wrapped tenderloin, and buttermilk fried chicken.
But the highlight of OD is a drinks menu littered with adult’s only booze-filled milkshakes, a large beer and wine list, and an expansive cocktail menu containing original, classic, and seasonal favorites. Bartender Ryan Murphy suggests imbibing the “Suffering Bastard,” a perfect hair of the dog recipe invented by a Jewish Italian who was rumored to also be a spy at a British-owned hotel in Egypt during WWII. The drink was created to help sober up hung over Britons so they would be able to defeat the encroaching Nazis during their African campaign.
The Bastard is equal parts brandy and gin, fresh lime juice, a dash of Angostura bitters, all topped off with six ounces of ginger beer, which was added to help settle the soldiers’ stomachs while the spirits would reignite their buzz. “I once chose this classic cocktail hangover cure for a daily special, which we ultimately realized would be a perfect cocktail for our summer menu,” says Murphy. “It’s refreshing, and it also allows us to showcase Cock ‘N Bull Ginger Beer. The Bastard is a really great fit for our list, which features classic cocktails with an original twist that makes them our own. Because, let’s be real, we all need a little secret cure when we are hanging on from the night before.”

1 dash bitters
6oz Cock and Bull ginger beer
